Naturopathy Defined

Naturopathy is a distinct system of health and healing - a philosophy, science, art and practice which seek to promote health by stimulating and supporting the body's inherent power to regain harmony and balance. Although the term naturopathy was first used at the turn of the 20th century, the philosophical basis and many of the methods of naturopathy are ancient, some dating back at least to 400BC, when Hippocrates became famous for his treatment of dis-ease in accordance with natural laws. In fact, although Hippocrates is called the Father of Medicine, modern medical science completely ignores the self-evident laws of health laid down by him, which state:

*    Only nature heals, providing it is given the opportunity.
*    Let food be your medicine and let medicine be your food.
*    Disease is an expression of purification.
*    All disease is one.

In teaching clients how to live a healthy, holistic lifestyle, naturopaths follow these principles:

Do no harm
Naturopaths do not use harmful, artificial substances such as drugs and pharmaceuticals; nor do they use invasive and dangerous procedures such as surgery.

Work with the healing power of nature
Naturopaths understand the body's innate capacity for self-healing. They educate clients in creating external and internal environments conducive to healing.

Find and eliminate the cause of poor health
Naturopaths help clients evaluate their lifestyle choices in order to identify both the cause of a problem and how it is best corrected.

Teach health
Naturopaths teach clients how to achieve and maintain good health. They empower their clients, enabling them to participate fully in the process of staying well.

Honor the total person
Naturopaths understand that people are interconnected physical, mental, and spiritual beings, and that one disease affects all areas of life.

Dis-ease Prevention
By teaching clients how to create and maintain a healthy balance, naturopaths help others achieve future health.

The Philosophy of Naturopathy

Naturopaths believe that the causes of diseases, or dis-eases, as we call them, are often seemingly unrelated to its symptoms. Naturopaths provide support to the body's immunological healing system and do not use substances that do not enhance the healing process. The maintenance of harmony, balance, and a normal flow of energy throughout the body are the goals of natural healing.

Naturopathic and holistic healing have many definitions. We see it as the use of natural substances such as fresh air, pure water, sunlight, herbs, vitamins, minerals, natural diets, exercise, adequate rest,  magnetism, psychology, and proper skeletal alignment. It is an eclectic healing system and a separate school of thought, employing a fusion of  methods to promote and maintain the health of body and mind. It aids the natural defenses and immune system of the body. It involves the whole person, including the body, mind and spirit.

It is the art of aiding the body to regain and maintain harmony, energy, and stasis. It employs a detailed holistic evaluation to determine weaknesses in the clients body; as opposed to diagnosis, symptomology, and the naming of dis-eases. After determining the basic causes for the client's suffering, it is addressed and corrected by natural means. The body is stimulated and strengthened to aid the body in healing itself naturally. This technique dates back to ancient Egypt and Persia. It established its modern roots in America about 125 years ago. Today it is practiced widely throughout Europe and in many states of the USA.

While nutrition is important in health care and prevention, it must be recognized that if the digestive system is malfunctioning, even the best diet may cause a toxic condition. Other measures must then be used detoxify the body in order to correct the basic cause or causes of the illness.

Naturopathy is a valid and effective system of healing and regaining health. The goal of natural healing is to strengthen and assist the body's own mechanisms, to reduce stresses, and to correct imbalances. This results in a harmonic balance between the spirit, mind and body.

I look forward to working with you and assisting you to reach your health care goals.
